Welcome to Continuing Dental Education – your online resource for continuing education in dentistry, and continuing education for dental hygienists. This site is compendium of continuing education in dentistry, as well as a guide to Dental Continuing Education courses online, seminars, meetings, correspondence courses and cruises.
Dental Continuing Education
As a dentist, you need continuing education in dentistry in order to stay current with new laws and new techniques. Researchers are continually making new advances in the field of dentistry and you need to keep up with these new developments. In addition, all the state boards require that all dentists take continuing courses in dentistry.
It’s important for you to understand your state’s regulations concerning dental continuing education. If you do not comply, the board may revoke your license.
Some of the other important reasons for taking dental continuing education classes:
1. You will gain new skills. Continuing education for dentistry will teach you about the newest and latest techniques that may attract more customers, particularly if you are one of the only dentists in your area that specializes in these procedures.
2. You can keep current with the latest laws. When you take continuing education seminars for dentists, you can learn about the laws that directly affect your business practice.
3. You can network with other dentists when you take dental continuing education classes. Try to find another dentist that would compliment your service. For example, if you refer your patients to an orthodontist, he or she may refer their patients to you for regular cleanings.
Dental Continuing Education Courses
Dr. Gordon Christensen wrote in a recent article in the March 2007 JADA entitled “Dealing With The Increasing Need For Continuing Education.” Dr. Christensen makes mention of the fact that dental schools do not adequately prepare graduates for all areas of practice. This is mainly due to the vast amount of information currently present in dentistry. He maintains that the solution is ongoing and intensive education. The point being made here refers to initial competency and the lack of time to sufficiently prepare all of the new graduates in all areas of modern dentistry.
Online Continuing Dental Education Classes
There are a growing number of continuing dental education courses being offered online via the internet. Many dental practitioners are choosing to make use of online course offerings. There are varied as to the topic of study, length of each course, credit hours and the cost.
There are at least 157 continuing education dental courses being offered by approximately 30 providers covering a wide range of topics. Most of the courses were five screens long or shorter and credit hours per screen ranged from 0.05 to 2 and the cost varied and ranged up to around $25.00 per credit hour.
There are also many courses being offered via video by means of a two-way interactive audio and video communication system. The instructor controls what is seen and heard but participants are able to enter into the discussion by using microphones. This may be another option for those who do not wish to travel to different parts of the country to participate in CDE courses away from home.
We have assembled a list of links to various online Continuing Dental Education, or CDE courses as they can be difficult to locate and only accessible easily to those accustomed to retrieving information on the internet. We hope you will make use of these and other resources found on this website.
