Dentistry is the assessment, identification, prevention and handling of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. Those that have been trained to deal with our teeth are known as dentists, although others include: dental assistants, hygienists, technicians and therapists. People with problems such as tooth decay should always go to a dentist as soon as possible to avoid the issue becoming more problematic. People should also be aware that many oral diseases or abnormalities could also be symptoms of neural or other diseases. All dentists must have a certain degree of skill in various disciplines in order for them to have become accredited so there is no need to fear them, it is much more irresponsible to a) ignore the problem or b) to attempt to fix it yourself! Dentists themselves are constantly training and learning new and improved methods, often continuing dental education throughout their career.

A recent survey has reported that shockingly almost 1 in 10 people have tried some kind of DIY dentistry. This survey also showed that the same amount of people, although not having tried their own dentistry, knew at least 1 other person who had attempted it. Whilst some of the people who had decided to treat themselves had used pliers to extract a tooth, others had tried to whiten their own teeth most dangerously with household products. Others had used the more widely known method of attempting to take a tooth out using a string that had been tied onto a door handle. DIY dentistry is not only dangerous; it is also most unnecessary! If someone is so keen to do their own dental work, ensure that they attend some dental education classes.
