bad breath?

my cat has bad breath- he needs mouth wash- what could be wrong with him? my female cat has okay breath and their eating the same food they are both up to date with shots and are both neutered/spayed. what could be the problem and should i pay over 40 bucks to take him to the vet?

Please do not wait, take your cat into the vet for a checkup. Reasons such a failing kidneys, viral or bacterial diseases, or periodontal disease (dental disease) may be the culprit.
Most often halitosis (bad breath) is caused by bacteria and tarter built up on the teeth. Just like humans, cats and dogs require both at home tooth brushing and professional cleanings to keep their teeth healthy. When a cat or dog has tarter build up it calcifies allowing bacteria to invade, causing red swollen gums, yellow or brown discoloration of the teeth (esp. the molars), tooth loss, cracked teeth, bleeding gums, and septicemia (bacterial infection which gets into the blood stream) which leads to kidney, liver, and heart failure.
Please do the right thing and take your cat into the vet. A professional cleaning will cost you money, but treating septicemia, or organ failure will be MUCH more costly and may not end well. Remember that our animals age faster than us. They are considered senior citizens at the age of 7 years. Their bodies go through the same diseases ours do but at a much faster rate and if we are not on top of their health care we can lose them. There is no price tag on a life.
Please be responsible and take him in…or it could cost you his life…

I know that a very common cause of bad breath in cats are sists in the mouth, it is caused by bacteria build up in a certain area. This needs to be looked at by a vet these can get very painful.
You may want to….he could be having a dental issue. When was the last time he had his teeth cleaned?
Tooth decay can lead to rotten smelling breath in dogs and cats. Abcesses can too, and they can be painful for the animal. Bad teeth can also cause other problems….infections of the gums can lead to kidney and heart issues.
Might be time for a dental check. The vet should do that during a routine visit.
Bad breath can mean many things. The cat could need a dental cleaning, or it could mean kidney problems, or it could mean the cat just has bad breath.
Is there anything else wrong with him? If not, you could call the vet and see what they suggest, rather than bringing him in. I would suggest you don’t think of vet visits in terms of dollar amounts, though. You can’t put a price on good health, for your cat or yourself.
Your cat probably has gingivitis, inflammtion of the gums . Check to see if the gums are very red. A trip to the vet will take care of the problem , he will have to sedate your cat to give it the cleaning and treatment he or she needs. You will also have to start practicing oral hygene with your cat brushing thier teeth to eliminate plaque and tartar.Foods especially canned foods canleave a foul smell to their breath. Get the cat checked .
Some cats are stinkier then others but their could be a problem with him . Try a few products yourself first they sell stuff that will make the cats breath smell better then yours in almost all pet stores. If that don’t work after three weeks then take it to a vet.
Two of my cats have bad breath- two do not. They eat the same food. I use cat toothpaste with a cat toothbrush- this seems to help. I also give them Feline Greenies dental treats.
how often do you brush his teeth. there might be an infection or something going on there. you should brush your cats teeth at the absolute least once a month, idealy every day or every week.
one of my cats (years ago) had really really bad breath, his kidneys were failing, and thats what caused it, i would take him in…my vet told me that a lot of times a cats breath will be awful due to infection. good luck!! i hope hes ok!
Yes, you should spend the $40 to take him to the Vet.
It’s very possible that he has a problem with one of his teeth, like an absess or he may have cut his gum somehow and it’s become infected.
Your cat may have dental problems that need to be addressed by a vet. And in healthcare some times bad breath is a symptom of another health problem. If nothing else your vet may be able to provide information on feline oral care to reduce feline halitosis.
The cat might have dental problems/pain. It is well worth spending the money to take care of your cat.
