I would like a detailed explanation on how you do tests, how points are calculated, homework, and all that. Btw is a text book required? how does that work.

Online courses vary as much as in-class courses do. It depends on the subject and the instructor.
Basically, everything you need to do is online. At my college, some classes require that you come in person one day for an orientation with your instructor before starting the class. After that, you login to your online course (using Blackboard) and there are sections (with links). A section for homework assignments, a section for quizzes and exams, a section for chatting with classmates and the instructor, a section with a discussion board. Generally, you’re required to respond to questions on the discussion board – this is like your in-class particpation grade.
Exams and quizzes can be either graded by the system (if they are multiple choice, short answer) or by the instructor (if they include more writing). Your assignments will be submitted online or as attachments to email.
Here’s some information from Los Angeles Southwest College about Online Classes:

I hope I’ve helped.
Note: The Y!Answers site has a section for voting. It is filled with tens of thousands of questions just like yours – with a promise of 10 points for best answer – which never get voted on! I recommend that for every question you ask or answer you vote at least once (more is better). Thanks.
Online courses at a community college? You’re taking the two worst elements of education and putting them together. Be very very careful before giving money to a program like this, most of them aren’t worth the paper the "degree" is printed on.
Simple. I enjoy the independent learning aspect of it. There are weekly discussion board post and assignments are given. You do them and submit b4 the end of the week. Also it contains a midterm and final. You can work according to your schedule. It’s wonderful
