Periodontics - A branch of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the tissues and structures that are present around the teeth. And also maintainance hygiene and aesthetics of the tissues.

Prosthodontics - A branch of dentistry that deals with the restoration and maintainance of oral structures with structures and materials such as dentures and bridges.

Orthodontics - A branch of dentistry dealing with the maintainance of the posture and straightening of the teeth, management of irregularities and abnormalities of teeth, jaw and oral structures.

Endodontics - A branch of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the diseases affecting dental pulp, root and periapical tissues.

Pediatric Dentistry - A branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of diseases in children and adolescents.

Oral Surgery - A branch of dentistry that deals with the surgical procedures and treatment related to teeth, jaws, face and other oral tissues.

You might consider working as a dental receptionist for a while. It allows you to work in a dental office setting and get a better feel for the job before deciding. You learn a lot of the basics about teeth (and also insurance,) and you can talk to the rest of the dental team to get a better perspective on whether you want to do it or not.

You could also contact a dental office to see if they'll let you sit in and observe the hygienist for a few days to help decide if being in people's mouths all day is really as bad as you think it is.
